The Grange School curriculum provides an academically challenging, yet fun experience. This addresses various learning styles, thereby developing intellectual curiosity and the life skills required for successful learning. It promotes the development of clear and independent thinkers in preparation for the next stage of the child’s academic pursuits.
Key Stages 3 have their own distinct curriculum, complemented by a wide range of co-curricular programmes and a structured pastoral care system.
We desire for our students to listen attentively in class, collaborate with their peers and learn how to study. With the advancement in technology, we want students to be as confident in their use of various devices, as they are with their books.
Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The lower secondary curriculum focuses on the following principles: • Scientific enquiry • Creativity • Problem solving • Teamwork • Collaborative learning • Critical thinking
Fifteen subjects which comprise English Language, Drama, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, French, Spanish, Art and Design, Physical Education ( PE), Nigerian Studies, and Music are taught by specialist teachers in Year 7.
Pupils are required to drop either French or Spanish in Year 8, leaving each child with a single modern foreign language from Year 8 onwards. Business Studies is introduced in Year 8 and is a compulsory subject. PSHE(Personal, Social and Health Education) is timetabled weekly and taught by form tutors during form period and in assembly time by the pastoral leaders or other speakers.
PE, outdoor activities and games form part of the curriculum. The main sports are Football, Basketball, Swimming, Athletics, Table tennis and Volleyball.
The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed for ages 11 to 14 children. At the end of this stage, the students write Checkpoint Examination conducted by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in English Language, Mathematics and Science. In addition to this, the school conducts internal assessments and examinations in the subjects listed above.
In the third year of a child’s academic programme in the secondary school, (Year 9) the child, guided by the Careers counsellor and parents, will choose subjects to be studied at Key Stage 4. This ultimately leads to IGCSE qualifications.
Other opportunities for enriching the curricular include local excursions to various companies for Year 7 -10 students. In addition, we organise an integration weekend for Year 7 students (a weekend residential programme) while the Year 8 students go to Spain for a Language immersion programme. These activities seek to develop resilience, teamwork and leadership skills.
